How to Make a Kitchenaid Mixer Bowl Cover. Sew a cover for your Kitchenaid mixer bowl to keep out dust and crumbs. Your mixer will always be ready to use!

I love my KitchenAid mixer! Those of you who have one can attest that they are bulky and heavy.

The only place I can store my mixer out of site is in a cabinet above my head, and that just isn’t safe! So, it sits out on my counter all the time. And because it sits out all the time, the inside of the bowl can get dusty and food crumbs can fall into it between uses.

I don’t like having to wash out the bowl every time! A fat quarter is a perfect size to make a KitchenAid mixer bowl cover for yourself.

Supplies:

Cut Fabric

First, you will measure how big you need your circle to be.

Place your bowl, top side down onto the wrong side of your fabric. Using a compass, set the distance between the point and the pencil to be about 2 inches. Using the point of the compass as a guide, trace around the outside edge of your bowl.

You can also free hand a circle around the bowl, but the compass will be much more accurate for most people.

Note: In the above picture, I had only measured about an inch away from the bowl, and after I cut it, and started to pin it I realized the cover was going to be too small. So, I recommend at least 2 inches of extra fabric around the bowl, but up to 4 inches if you want the cover to pull down farther over the top.

Note: Since your bowl may be slightly different than the one I have, I am sharing general directions on how to get a good measurement for your particular bowl.

Cut out the circle of fabric.

Create a Curved Hem

I found a helpful tutorial for hemming a curve of fabric at By Hand London. The method I chose to create my hem was the first one listed.

Since my elastic is 1/4″ wide, I wanted a hem that is 3/8″ wide. It is only slightly bigger than the elastic.

Start by sewing a straight stitch around the entire circle at 3/8″. Using the stitches as your guide, turn in the hem and iron.

Repeat this step again, this time using the ironed edge as your guide to helpturnthe fabric in for the second time.

I would recommend pinning as you go to keep everything in place. You may have to gather the fabric a little along the back because of the curved edges.

Sew the Hem

Sew as close to the folded edge as possible. Be sure to leave an inch or two opening at the end to be able to insert the elastic.

Add the Elastic

Using the top edge of the bowl as a guide, measure approximately how much elastic you will need. I stretched the elastic around the top edge and cut it. You want the elastic to be pretty tight around the bowl.

To add the elastic, start by taking a safety pin and pinning it to one end of the elastic. Slide the safety pin through the opening in the fabric hem. Using a safety pin to pull the elastic through is much easier than using the bare elastic end.

Once you get around to the other side, use a sewing machine to attach the two ends of the elastic together. You can use a straight stitch or a zig-zag stitch for this.

Then, finish off the opening of the seam by sewing it closed. Your KitchenAid mixer bowl cover is ready to keep the bowl nice and clean!
