We have this dish periodically as my teen loves it. Sometimes I use spicy sausage, sometimes mild. Tonight I didn't have enough fresh tomato so I also added a can of diced tomato and it was still good. A nice, basic, easy meal to prepare on a busy work night.

I've made this dish several times and we love it. The key is using just picked garden tomatoes and high quality cheese. I use sweet Italian turkey sausage, Vidalia onions, and Parmesan instead of Romano Cheese. This dish is company-worthy. The directions are correct too.

I gave this dish five stars for its simplicity and satisfaction factor. I used hot Italian sausage and I peeled the tomatoes; which is super easy to do if you crosshatch and blanch them. I was worried it might be bland because it is so simple, but fear not! Came out moist, spicy, and VERY good!

Read everyone's reviews before making this dish....added extra basil, crushed red pepper, more garlic and extra cheese. Wilted the basil during the last minute to add a punch...still lacking that special something. I used sweet Italian sausage, I'll try it again using hot Italian sausage next time.

Very tasty! Highly recommend a little extra basil for flavor. Didn't have an issue with it being dry. If you don't drain the sausage after cooking, you shouldn't have an issue. Plus the little bit of fat from the sausage adds flavor to the pasta. Next time I might try diced tomatoes from a can, drained. I wasn't a big fan of the tomato skins that were left at the bottom of the batch. Reheated very well the next day.

I also think it would go well with spaghetti noodles, which may work better for me so that my kids can have their plain butter noodles and the hubby and I can have the 'sauce'.

Used fresh Roma tomatoes and basil from the garden, Johnsonville sweet Italian sausage and Whole Foods Pecorino Romano cheese. Prepared as written, adjusting seasonings to taste: an additional teaspoon of minced garlic and an additional 1/4 teaspoons of Kosher salt. Resisted the urge to add crushed red pepper flakes, which I normally add to my Bolognese sauce. Loved the fresh sweet flavor of the "sauce," but felt the ratio to pasta was thin. Next time, I'l either cut back on the pasta or increase the amount of chopped tomatoes, onions, etc.

Took advice of a reviewer and roasted the tomatoes for about 40 minutes at 400 with some basil and oregano. Did not have romano cheese on hand - but used a premix of parmeasan, asiago and romano cheeses - worked fine. recipe was excellent and really easy to put together. Also allows flexibility to vary cheese amount per dish - as my husband loves a lot of cheese - whereas i like a lot also, but try to go lighter!

i had some romas ready in the garden and some freshly grated pecorino in the fridge so i'm glad i found this recipe today! i'm not big on measuring, so maybe it was my fault but i think it was too oniony. i'll only use half next time. i used dreamfields penne to keep the carbs down. i also added some crushed red pepper and used dried italian seasoning blend rather than fresh basil (the japanese beetles got my basil this year). my husband liked it, and i love the way it's so fast and uses my fresh tomatos so i'll make this again! thanks!

My husband and I made this last night and we both thought it was delicious!! Since there are only 2 of us, I halved the recipe EXCEPT I did use a pound of plum tomatoes as we like our pasta on the saucy side. In addition, I used 3 large cloves of garlic and just over 4 oz of spicy Italian sausage. As another reviewer suggested, I added a touch of the pasta water to the dish and I mixed in the basil rather than sprinkle on top. I used the Ronzoni Smart Taste Pasta. Will add to the pasta rotation!!

My husband and I both liked this a lot, and the estimated prep time (40 min.) is pretty accurate, given the time needed to chop the tomatoes. I omitted the onions, used 1 tbsp. dried basil (and mixed it in rather than sprinkling it on top) and used whole-wheat penne (which I thought fit in just fine, unlike another reviewer, as it added an extra heartiness to this autumn dish). I did served this with green beans but simply roasted them with some oil, sea salt and pepper. I would certainly make this dish again, though next time I will either cut the amount of oil or omit it entirely, as it seems unnecessary without the onion.

I made this with whole wheat penne and I think that was a bad idea - I think the whole wheat was a little too overpowering for this light dish (even with the sausage). Making this with fresh peak-season tomatoes and basil I'm sure is key to how good this dish is; since I did use fresh, the flavors were great! The pecorino was a different taste, but in retrospect, I could have used parm for a similar result. I will make this again while it's tomato season and next time use regular pasta.

This is a nice lightened version of a classic dish. Unlike the previous reviews, I found this dish very flavorful. However, I used hot sausage instead of sweet, six cloves of garlic, put all the 6 Tbl cheese in with the sauce to fuse the flavor, and put the basil in the sauce for 2 mins to wilt it. I added a little of the starchy pasta cooking water to the pot to have a little thicker sauce. I just chopped the tomato and tossed it at the end with the pasta and cheese rather than cooking it. The 8 oz pasta is the right proportion for the sausage, but be careful on your serving size since 1/4 of the recipe has 10g fat.
