East Valley basketball standouts earn all-district honors (2024)

The 2020-21 basketball season was loaded with success for boys and girls teams across the East Valley in UIL and TAPPS competition.

The Harlingen High Lady Cardinals were the top girls team, reaching the Sweet 16 in Class 6A after recording their third straight undefeated District 32-6A championship. Lady Cardinals senior Callie Cervantes earned the district's most valuable player award, and sophom*ore Rosa Zapata was tabbed the defensive player of the year.

Los Fresnos sophom*ore Gerry Martinez repeated as the boys District 32-6A most valuable player. Falcons freshman JJ Salazar was named the newcomer of the year. Brownsville Hanna's Charles Thirlwall earned the top defensive player title.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial defended its district championship, as the Lady Chargers went 13-1 in District 32-5A then advanced to the area round. Two Lady Chargers, Bryanna Buitureira and Caitlin Esquivel, shared the most valuable player award. Brownsville Veterans' Arnold Torres was named the top coach.

Brownsville Pace freshman Andie Lozano-Lomeli earned 32-5A's newcomer of the year award. Pace's Ashley Gonzalez and BVM's Julia "Juju" Alvarez made the all-defensive team.

The Pace Vikings were the undefeated 32-5A boys champions. Junior Cristian Guajardo earned the most valuable player award, senior Abraham Rincon was the defensive player of the year and Jose Luis Ramirez was named the top coach.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial senior Matthew Maddox was tabbed the district's offensive player of the year.

The Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats were the only team in the Rio Grande Valley to notch an unbeaten record through the regular season. Rio Hondo clinched the District 32-4A girls championship, led by senior most valuable player Natalie Martinez and sophom*ore offensive player of the year Eliza Rodriguez.

La Feria's Sabrina Castaneda was named 32-4A's defensive player of the year, and Alexis Villarreal was tabbed the sixth man of the year.

The Port Isabel Tarpons won the District 32-4A boys championship, ending a 31-year drought. Senior Cole Pinkerton was named the co-most valuable player with Hidalgo's Kyle Perales. Port Isabel's Daniel Zamarron earned the newcomer of the year award, and Mike Hazelton was the coach of the year.

Raymondville's Jayson Cantu was the district's offensive player of the year and La Feria's Dario Sanchez was the top defensive player.

Brownsville IDEA Frontier earned a historic District 32-3A championship. Frontier senior Sheyla Cosme was the district's most valuable player, senior Alma Medellin was the defensive player of the year and junior Judith Araujo got the sixth man award.

Brownsville IDEA Riverview's Ariadna Jimenez was tabbed the offensive player of the year. Santa Rosa sophom*ore Leslie Flores was named the district's top newcomer.

The Santa Rosa Warriors and Brownsville Jubilee Titans claimed all of the District 32-3A boys superlatives. Warriors coach Adrian Trevino and Titans coach Joshua Hernandez, both in their first year with their respective programs, were co-coaches of the year.

Santa Rosa's CJ Olivarez was named most valuable player and David Bazaldua was the defensive player of the year. The duo led the Warriors to the Class 3A Elite Eight. Jubilee's Cameron Davila was tabbed the top offensive player, Arturo Garcia took the sixth man award and Anthony Vicenio was named newcomer of the year.

In District 31-3A, the district champion Lyford Lady Bulldogs had four players earn superlatives. Junior Damaris Bermudez was named co-most valuable player with Weslaco IDEA Pike's Patty Gaytan. Marley Perez was tabbed the offensive player of the year, and Emily Gonzalez was the top defensive player. Destiny Gonzalez was one of three girls awarded sixth man of the year.

Lyford Bulldogs senior Julio Cantu was the 31-3A boys' sixth man of the year.

Three Santa Maria Lady Cougars earned top awards in District 32-2A. Senior Yazmin Cantu shared the most valuable player honor with Premont's Andrea Cantu and Cameran Cantu of Freer. Anahi Magadaleno was the tri-defensive player of the year, and freshman Mia Picazo was the tri-newcomer of the year.

The Santa Maria Cougars were the co-District 32-2A champions. Bernardino Castellanos earned the most valuable player title, Christopher Ibarra was the offensive player of the year and Erick Castellanos was the top defensive player. Santa Maria's Albert Briones was named coach of the year.

In District 32-1A, San Isidro junior Mia Alvarado was a unanimous decision for offensive player of the year, and Emma Garcia earned the sixth man award. San Perlita's Jasmine Rodriguez was named the defensive player of the year.

The San Perlita Trojans won their fourth consecutive District 32-1A title and reached the Elite Eight. Senior James Herrera led the way and was tabbed the district's most valuable player. Ely Terry earned offensive player of the year and Max Graciani was the sixth man of the year. Trojans coach Nataniel Garza was named co-coach of the year with Tilden's Jeremy Mills.

The Brownsville St. Joseph Lady Bloodhounds won the TAPPS 5A District 4 championship and had five players earn first-team all-district honors.

The Bloodhounds also won the boys district title and claimed three superlatives. Lucky Edge was the top offensive player, Josh Cisneros was the defensive player of the year and Sam Lucio was tabbed coach of the year. Both SJA teams reached the TAPPS 5A Elite Eight.
